A Song of Art

Every couple of months, I submit one or two pieces to the Price Center shows. These shows aren't juried, so I am doing this for exposure and because a deadline is helpful for making sure I get consistent studio time. This recent show, the 5th this year, has the theme of music. We were asked to pick a song title that relates to the art in some way, allowing the gallery to create a playlist for the show.

Blue Moon, You Saw Me Standin' Alone, Batik on Silk, 2024

The bronze resist on this painting of an owl in a tree with a moon, was a bit too wet when I washed in dye, so the brown of the tree "blew out" into the sky. I set it aside, thinking it ruined, but when I went back through my portfolio, I realized that the dreamy quality of the landscape was actually perfect for the theme, the red spots like musical notes, the moon like a watcher in the sky.

Moon River, Wider than a Mile, 2024, Batik on Silk

The moon theme was set and I found a photo of the moon on the sea in Alaska, taken by my dad while he was kayaking around the islands below Juneau. It had such a lonely, longing feel, it made the perfect mate to the owl in the tree, another moon on a quiet night.

Both paintings will be on show at the Price Center through the months of September and October while I plan for the next show.
